Miss SA & Mr SA go Crowdfunding with Backabuddy!

Since the start of the Knysna fires, 35 campaigns have been set up on Backabuddy (A local crowdfunding platform) to crowdfund for the devastated families. Miss South Africa Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters’ appeal to save her hometown of Sedgefield from the widepread fires and Mr South Africa, Habib Noorbhai’s campaign to raise R1,200,000.00 for Cape Town’s destitute, were amongst the stream of new signups.
With the backing and support of Sun International and Cell C, Miss SA Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters has urged South Africans to help her raise funds for those who have lost everything in the fires that are raging along the Garden Route.Miss_SA_Cell_C1.jpg

Demi-Leigh said: “I grew up in Sedgefield which is in the heart of the area along the Garden Route that has been ravaged by fire.

“I therefore ask all of those who would like to assist to help me help those in need – those who have lost their homes and all their worldly possessions.”A fund has already been set up by the Sedgefield Lions, a group of socially minded people who often assist in raising funds for charities.

All monies collected will be used by the Sedgefield Lions to buy much needed supplies, including such items as water, tinned food, baby food, bread, blankets, toiletries as well as pet food. All proceeds will be distributed across the Garden Route to affected families.

On Thursday afternoon (8th June), Demi visited the 947express studios in Johannesburg for an interview with Darren ‘Whackhead’ Simpson where she discussed her Backabuddy campaign. Her plea didn’t fall on deaf ears, after the conclusion of her interview she secured over R150 000 in donations from the extraordinary individuals of South Africa. Her campaign has since raised R409 022.59 towards her fundraising target of R500 000 in less than 72 hours, a new record on Backabuddy!

With messages of support and donations from of all over the world, Miss SA has once again done South Africa proud. She has inspired and empowered individuals to do their part, to donate even the smallest amounts, because every rand makes a difference and will impact the people of Knysna in their most vulnerable hour exponentially.

Less than 24 hours after Miss SA created her crowdfunding page she was joined by another high profile celeb, Mr South Africa himself!

The Western Cape is currently enduring one of the coldest winters together with natural disasters that have propelled severe conditions towards people’s lives, health, living conditions and assets. It is for this reason that Mr South Africa, Habib Noorbhai has set up a campaign on Backabuddy for those poor individuals who are unable to provide for themselves, those who have nowhere to go this winter, those who can’t protect themselves against the elements, those who have nothing.

Some are more “destitute” than others and while some are able to get into their cars and drive to a new beginning others are trying to figure out how they are going to start over, for a third time. Where do we suppose they will go after everything has settled? They do not have insurance to cover them. They do not have a lifeline. They are destitute. Destitute.” – From Mr SA’s campaign page.

Mr South Africa 2017, Habib Noorbhai, would like to help the destitute and aims to raise R1,200,000.00 by the end of June. His campaign has already R4 302.15 Once the monies are raised, with the help of an NPO called The Humanitarians, will sustainably distribute the monies raised to the destitute who are in need of warmth, food and shelter.

In times like these, when are facing a relentless fire in Knysna and have individuals even closer to home who are also destitute, we need ordinary people to do extraordinary things, we need to inspire our friends and families to set up crowdfunding campaigns for causes close to their hearts.
